The museum itself is a piece of history. In 1895, an international competition was launched to design the building—the very first competition of its kind. It was won by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, and in 1902, Khedive Abbas Helmy II officially opened the museum’s doors. Since then, the iconic building in downtown Cairo has stood as both a landmark and a guardian of ancient wonders.

Among its priceless holdings are the complete burials of Yuya and Thuya, the treasures of Tanis, and the Narmer Palette—the artifact celebrating Egypt’s first unification under one king.
