Cairo (Pyramids & Museum)

Step into history at the Egyptian Museum, the first archaeological museum in the Middle East and still the largest home of Pharaonic treasures anywhere in the world. Walking through its halls is like journeying from Egypt’s Predynastic beginnings all the way to the Greco-Roman period.

History of museum

The museum itself is a piece of history. In 1895, an international competition was launched to design the building—the very first competition of its kind. It was won by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, and in 1902, Khedive Abbas Helmy II officially opened the museum’s doors. Since then, the iconic building in downtown Cairo has stood as both a landmark and a guardian of ancient wonders.

Among its priceless holdings are the complete burials of Yuya and Thuya, the treasures of Tanis, and the Narmer Palette—the artifact celebrating Egypt’s first unification under one king. Visitors can also admire the grand statues of Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, the legendary pyramid builders of Giza. With papyri, sarcophagi, jewelry, and countless other relics, the Egyptian Museum offers one of the most breathtaking journeys through antiquity
